Splenic Marginal Zone Lymphoma (SMZL)

Synonym for Splenic lymphoma with circulating villous lymphocytes (SLVL). Circulating lymphocytes may resemble hairy cells; small to medium sized lymphocytes with evenly dispersed chromatin, abundant pale cytoplasm and often short polar villi, but not all the lymphocytes will have these projections. There may also be some plasmacytoid lymphocytes present. There is no monocytoid differentiation as seen in MALT lymphoma. Differential diagnosis includes HCL, CLL, MCL and FL. Immunophenotyping is acquired to exclude these d.d.
