Megaloblastic anemia

Generally the peripheral blood smear shows a macrocytosis, no or little polychromasia and neutrophils show hypersegmentation.
There is hyperplastic bone marrow, with erythroid hyperplasia showing a left shift, typical morphological features such as increased nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio, the nuclear maturation is immature relative to cytoplasmic maturation and they have a deep basophilic cytoplasm. Mitotic figures, karyorrhexis and binucleated erytroblasts can be seen. Myelopoiesis show giant band neutrophils and giant metamyelocytes.
