Schistocytes

Schistocytes are mechanical destructed erytrocytes can be found in several microangiopathic diseases, including disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS)and thrombotic microangiopathies, but also in patients with hemolytic anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). They are frequently a consequence of mechanical artificial heart valves.
